My son from about 18 months has been completely captivated by any and all trucks. Which is why I knew making him a Monster Truck blanket for his bed would be a home run! The size is perfect for any crib, toddler or twin sized beds and will be a sure favorite for years to come.

I made this entire blanket for under $24 with plenty of yarn to spare!

This blanket is a huge bang for your buck in terms of yarn cost. I used Lion Brand Pound of Love yarn that I already had for making hats on my Addi knitting machine. I had gotten the yarn on sale at Joann’s for around $5 a skein making it a very affordable project. I still have enough left over yarn to make at least a dozen hats on my Addi to donate to charity. So if you are not in a hurry to get started keep an eye out for sales and be sure to Pin this pattern to easily access it later!

Notes

  1. This blanket is the perfect size for your toddler or twin sized bed.
  2. If you’d like to use a different yarn,  I highly recommend checking out www.yarnsub.com for really great tips on yarn substituting.
  3. C2C Basics:
    • Each square is made up of 3 double crochets.
    • For basic construction, I highly recommend this YouTube video: https://youtu.be/4wPWAbsd3fk
  4. Pattern is a rectangle C2C project:
  • You will increase once per row until Row 45 when you reach the top right corner of the blanket.
  • Rows 46-68 you’ll maintain 45 squares by increasing the bottom width and maintaining the height.
  • Rows 69-112 you’ll be decreasing on both ends making the rectangle close.
  • For more help: https://youtu.be/J6MV_-qjDtc
  • For changing colors, before finishing the last stitch of old color, put a loop of new color on hook and pull through. https://youtu.be/SbG78BvZw8E
  • Another option for changing colors is to carry your color underneath each square. Some people really don’t like this method but I personally hate weaving in ends and with this pattern you can potentially have endless ends to weave in. If interested check out this YouTube video on how to carry your yarn. https://youtu.be/Mb4sqLTkKtQ

Border

If you are a more visual learner, I have included a convenient stitch diagram for the border instructions in my ETSY listing for this pattern.

For the border I wanted to tie in the colors of the truck body and also make it look almost like flames to match the truck flames.  For that reason you will be changing colors for each row:

  • Row 1: Red
  • Row 2: Gold
  • Row 3: Red

Picot-3: Ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook.

  1. I can not thank you enough for making a gift for a little boy. I have been hunting for months for a cardigan for a toddler or preschooler or a blanket – nothing – when I saw this today on Share a pattern I nearly cried. My little guy will be 3 in August and this will be just perfect – thankyou.

    1. Hi,
I’m so happy to hear your excitement about my pattern! My son is almost 2 and is obsessed with his blanket and I know your little boy will love it just as much! Thank you again and have a great week!

  2. Hi am doing this blanket & on Row 27 & just noticed that d mc does not have the number of stitches & it’s the same in all the next few rows

    1. Hi Nikki,

Where ever you see MC (or any other colors) and it is not followed by a number then you will just be doing one square of that color. I originally did this for space saving purposes on the PDF version but you are actually the second person that has asked so I am updating the instructions to add the “x 1” for each to make it simpler for everyone to understand!

As you have noticed, throughout the pattern there are quite a few areas where you just do one square of the color. For those sections especially, I recommend “carrying” your color so you won’t have as many ends to weave in. Here’s a really great YouTube video on how to carry your yarn.

Thank you so much for contacting me and I really hope you are enjoying the pattern!

Thanks and have a great day!

    2. I’m am on the last row before decreasing on both side row 67 I think and I end up with 44 blocks instead of 45 it looks like the red which say 11 I had to make it 10 red but then that puts my next row off can you help me please

  3. I’m new to c2c making your monster truck blanket, and my truck ended up going long instead of wide what did I I do wrong

    1. Hi Laura!

Have you finished the blanket yet or is it beginning to look too long while in progress? The only thing I can think of without seeing the blanket is missing the first corner at the end of Row 46.

Once you reach the first corner (upper right) you’ll stop increasing the height of the blanket. You’ll do so by at the end of Row 46, slip stitching into the 1st square of row 45 instead of stitching another square on top and then turning your work, work 3 slip stitches on top of that square you just made. Begin row 47, you’ll chain 3 and start the next square as usual.

I know that I’m more of a visual learner so I linked a YouTube video that shows what I’m talking about.

I really hope that makes sense. If that’s not the solution please let me know, I really want to help in any way I can!

  4. I have just finished this for my 4 year old grandson and he loves it!
I really enjoyed making this and seeing the picture come together the pattern was easy to follow.
I tried to up load a picture as it says at the end of your instructions you would like to see the finished product but I couldn’t see how to do it.

    1. Hi Jackie!

I’m so happy your grandson loves the blanket and that you enjoyed the pattern! C2C blankets are very satisfying to make! I should have been a little more specific, you can either leave a review on ETSY with a photo or if you “create the project” on Ravelry then you’ll be able to upload photos, and add comments and I’ll even be able to share your photo on the project images.
